Reciting Al-Fatihah in Salah

The majority of Islamic scholars agree that reciting Surah Al-Fatihah during Salah is mandatory, and any prayer performed without it is considered incomplete. This ruling is based on the hadith narrated by ‘Ubâdah bin As-Sâmit (RA), where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"Whoever does not recite Surah Al-Fatihah in his prayer, his prayer is invalid."
(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.1, Hadith No. 723)

Virtues of Surah Al-Fatihah

Numerous hadiths highlight the exceptional virtues of Surah Al-Fatihah. Below are a few examples showcasing its unique status:

1️⃣ Allah responds to the believer in Salah

As narrated in Sahih Muslim by Abu Hurairah (RA), Salah is described as a conversation between Allah and His servant. When a believer recites Surah Al-Fatihah, Allah responds to each verse. This Surah itself is a dua, and Allah (SWT) accepts it as a supplication.

2️⃣ The Mother of the Quran

Surah Al-Fatihah is also called Umm-ul-Quran (Mother of the Quran) due to its profound significance. A hadith in Tirmidhi narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA) quotes the Prophet (peace be upon him):

"The chapter beginning with, ‘All praises and thanks are due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds,’ is the Mother of the Quran, the Mother of the Book, the Seven Oft-Repeated Verses, and the Great Qur’an."

3️⃣ Unique among all revelations

Once a companion requested the Prophet (peace be upon him) to teach him a Surah unlike any other revelation in the Torah, Injil, or Zabur. The Prophet (peace be upon him) pointed out the Surah recited in every Salah. The companion confirmed it was Umm-ul-Quran, and the Prophet responded:

"By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, nothing like it has been revealed in the Torah, Injil, Zabur, or even the rest of the Qur’an. It is the Seven Oft-Repeated Verses."
(Musnad Ahmad)

4️⃣ The Greatest Surah in the Quran

In another narration (Musnad Ahmad), Abu Sa’id ibn Al-Mu’alla (RA) recalls the Prophet (peace be upon him) saying:

"I will teach you a Surah that is the greatest in the Qur’an before you leave the mosque."
He then said:
"It is the chapter beginning with ‘All praise and thanks are due to Allah.’ It is the Seven Oft-Repeated Verses and the Great Qur’an that has been given to me."

5️⃣ Part of the two lights gifted to the Prophet

According to Sahih Muslim, Ibn Abbas (RA) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned two special gifts granted to him alone: Surah Al-Fatihah and the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah.

6️⃣ The most noble and excellent part of the Quran

Anas (RA) narrates in An-Nasa’i that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

"Shall I tell you about the noblest and most excellent part of the Qur’an?"
He then recited: “All praise and thanks are due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.”

Translation of Surah Al-Fatihah

"In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks belong to Allah, the Lord of all worlds.
The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Master of the Day of Judgment.
You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.
Guide us to the Straight Path.
The path of those You have blessed—not of those who have earned Your anger or gone astray."
(Quran: Surah Al-Fatihah)
